Come To The Show: The Felix Culpa’s Sever Your Roots Record Release Saturday Jan 23rd @ Metro
Note: A full and comprehensive record review was originally set to run today at this site for The Felix Culpa’s new album, Sever Your Roots. My story on the band and its new record will now see print in a future issue of a Chicago publication. More on that soon.

This Saturday, Jan. 23rd, the long wait is finally over. Fans of The Felix Culpa can head out to Metro for the Sever Your Roots record release event, the group’s first full-length since 2004’s Commitment. The show features support from fellow Chicago acts Loyal Divide and Suns (ex-Wax On Radio) in their live debut. Violent and sweeping, Sever is less a collection of songs and more a cohesive experience — the kind where the record is at its most effective and stunning in one full listen. For a preview of the new record, head to The Felix Culpa’s MySpace to sample four new tracks off Sever: “An Instrument,” “Mutiny,” “Because This Is How We Speak,” and “Our Holy Ghosts,” the latter of which is also available for download from Chicago show promo site Greatest Show Ever. Or check out the Sever Your Roots video teaser below:

The Fold VS Miley Cyrus: Every Lawsuit In The U.S.A.
Over the last week, online rumors have run rampant at sites like Absolute Punk and Twitter that The Fold is being sued by Miley Cyrus‘ camp over the group’s satirical “Every Band In The U.S.A.” pseudo-cover of the pop sensation’s hit, “Party In The U.S.A.” Now, the band has posted a response video to the entire situation, featuring impressive cameos from the likes of Pete Wentz, Plain White T’s frontman Tom Higgenson, and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth. Check out that video below,..
…and find the original cover in question here:
For more on The Fold’s Miley cover “Every Band In The U.S.A.”, itself quickly becoming a phenomenon, check out Jaime Black’s recent feature interview with frontman Dan Castady, wherein he talks about the origins of the song spoof, both in the current January all-local issue of Illinois Entertainer and at the magazine’s website as well. Below is an excerpt:
“We were on the worst tour of our professional lives,” Castady recalls of a recent run of autumn dates, “and it was really hard to even talk about the band, to be honest, at that point, because we were just not connecting, [and] the tour was booked terribly. And in the middle of it all, our merch girl says, ‘You guys should do a Miley Cyrus cover — that would really liven things up.’ And we said, ‘That’s the worst idea in the world. That’s what every band in the U.S.A. does. They all get up there and try to capitalize on what’s going on right now.’ And so, we kind of laughed it off, and then about 10 minutes later, our drummer Mark [Rhoades] said, ‘Well wait, maybe there’s something here. Maybe if we did the cover, we could rewrite the song, and it could be about every band in the U.S.A.’”
“A couple days later, just actually while we were still on that tour, I just kind of opened up my notes, and started writing it all down,” the frontman continues, “and we laughed about it, but we didn’t know anyone else would think it was funny.”
Or check out an earlier interview with Castady from a November 2009 episode of the ChicagoVerseUniteD audio podcast, featuring the frontman talking about the band’s latest record Dear Future, Come Get Me.
And catch the band live with fellow Chicago pop-rockers Cavashawn Jan. 21st at Lincoln Hall!
